Insomnia is a sleep disorder that is characterised by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. People with insomnia may have trouble getting to sleep initially, or they can fall asleep but cannot maintain sleep for as long as they would like. Insomnia is experienced at some time in most people’s lives, however long term or chronic insomnia can be harmful to physical and emotional health.
People with insomnia report as having one or more of the following symptoms:
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Waking up often during the night and having trouble going back to sleep
- Waking up too early in the morning
- Feeling tired upon waking
