Our Diagnostic Services

Our home sleep studies are known as Level 2 studies, using the same measurements as a laboratory sleep study (in-patient or overnight). This type of sleep study is not a screening test. It’s a simple and accurate method of diagnosing sleep apnoea. You’ll feel more comfortable having the test while sleeping in your own bed and in familiar surroundings.

What is a sleep monitor device?

A home sleep monitor is a small, portable device about the size of a mobile phone. It’s noninvasive and records various biological processes that take place while you sleep. Including:

  • Air movement through your nose to pick up snoring & apnoea events
  • Electrical activity in your brain to determine your stage of sleep & sleep disturbances
  • Eye movements to distinguish REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep
  • Chest movements that show whether you’re making an effort to breathe
  • The amount of oxygen in your blood
  • Your heart rate
  • Leg movements to diagnose Restless Legs/Periodic Leg Movement

How To Arrange To Have A Sleep Study

You’ll need a referral from a referring specialist or general practitioner. Once we have the referral, we’ll contact you to discuss how you would like to have your home sleep study and organise the appropriate appointment time. Alternatively, you can call us to arrange an appointment and email or drop your referral into one of our clinics.

Our sleep technologists can facilitate your home sleep study in three different ways:

  1. You can be set up with the sleep equipment in one of our sleep clinics, late in the afternoon. Once the setup is complete, you’ll need to go straight home as the device cannot be removed until the next morning.
  2. The sleep study equipment can be collected from one of our clinics in Taree, Forster or Gloucester from Monday to Friday between 2.00pm and 5.30pm. Alternate times can be arranged if necessary. The equipment can also be couriered to your home. We’ll pack the equipment in a small bag, along with an instructional video and written instructions showing you how to attach the equipment.
  3. Our technicians can also visit your home in the evening and attach the equipment for you. There is a fee associated with this visit depending on where you live.

The setup will take between 45 minutes to one hour to complete. You’ll be asked to complete some paperwork, then our sleep technologist will take a brief medical history and provide information on sleep apnoea. The next morning you’ll return the sleep monitoring device to one of our clinics near where you live.

How Long Will It Take To Get My Results?

At the Mid North Coast Sleep Clinic, we are committed to a fast turnaround for results. Once you have returned the home sleep study equipment, the data is downloaded and analysed by one of our sleep scientists and then reviewed by one of our sleep physicians. A report will be sent back to your referring doctor within 4 to 7 days of your test. The sleep clinic will contact you personally when these results have been reported on. If your sleep study results indicate that you do have sleep apnoea, then your doctor will discuss its severity, possible effects on your health and treatment options with you.

What is the cost of a home sleep study?

The actual sleep study is covered by Medicare, however there is an Initial Consultation Fee applicable which covers setting up the sleep study, the consumables used and hire of the equipment. Some health funds may cover this
